Although it's only October, the first signs of wintry weather are beginning to show. Here are some top tips to ensure your home is kitted out for the upcoming frosty months.

1. Cosy rugs and blankets

Make your living area look homely and warm by covering colder wooden or tiled floors with thick fluffy rugs. They will help you escape the unwelcome chill on your feet in the morning.

Scattering fluffy cushions, throws and blankets around your sitting room is also a great way to incorporate new colours and patterns into your décor. Plus, there's nothing nicer than snuggling up under a blanket watching TV after a long day.

2. Mood Lighting

There's nothing more welcoming than the flickering glow of a candle when you step into a room. Debenhams stocks an array of beautiful autumnal and Christmassy scents to really get you in the mood for the festive period.

Fairy lights also help to create warmth and a more intimate atmosphere to a room. Whether draped across the mantelpiece or wound around your bed headboard, the versatility and simplicity of the lights as a beautiful accessory can complete any room.

3. Preserve Outdoor Equipment

Thinking practically, outdoor tables, chairs, children’s toys and bikes all deteriorate in the damp and cold weather. Make sure you keep them in good condition by storing them in your porch or garden shed. B&Q has a great range of sheds and garden shelters, which are pretty as well as practical.

4. Keep the bad weather outside

With the wet weather comes dirty floors, thanks to muddy paws and shoes. Ensure you keep your flooring in tip-top condition throughout the winter months by making sure you have a shoe rack, doormat and coat stand by your doorway.

5. Christmas decorations

We know you're reluctant to think about Christmas already, but as the cards and decorations are already appearing in the shops and we'd be lying if we said we weren't a little bit excited!

Whether you're gathering decorations to match a new festive colour theme or planning on creating some of your own, it’s a great way to inject a bit of festive cheer into your home. Decorating the house together is a great family activity, and will really get you in the festive spirit!

6. Appreciate your home

After hours of decking the halls, all that is left to do is admire your hard work. It's likely you'll spend more time at home during the colder months, so take time out with the family and stop to appreciate your completely unique home.
