How much are we really spending on Friend's or Family Members New Babies?
It is well-known that having kids can be expensive – but new research has revealed just how generous Brits are when welcoming a new baby into the world - and it’s not cheap!
We surveyed over 1,000 adults across the UK and found that Brits are spending a total of £179.74 on gifts for friends or family members’ unborn babies, all before their first birthday – clearly Brits are a generous bunch when it comes to new baby gifting.
It’s great to see that Brits enjoy celebrating the wonderful news of a pregnancy with loved ones, showering them with gifts and attention and often this is done in the anticipation of the new arrival. The research revealed that a significant £77.51 of the total is spent before the baby is even born, then a further £102.23 is spent once the bundle of joy has arrived.
Baby showers topped the list as the most popular ‘new baby’ gifting occasion, following christenings or other religious ceremonies. Baby showers are a great way to congratulate expectant mothers and fathers, helping to build new memories around the special occasion.
37% of those aged 18-24 admitted to buying gifts for a loved ones’ baby shower, compared to just 6% of those aged 55 or over, highlighting that this modern gifting occasion is a much more familiar tradition with younger generations.
Other popular gifting occasions include ‘welcome to the world’ parties and naming ceremonies, both of which are lovely ways to celebrate the arrival of a new baby.
The data also reveals that it isn’t just about spoiling babies before and upon birth. In fact, Brits will continue to spoil their loved ones’ children long after they are born. Almost 1 in 4 (23%) admit that buying birthday presents for the offspring of their family or friends can be a lifelong task.
However, it’s clear that Brits see the value in doing so, whether it be during the pregnancy or after the birth.
It’s certainly an extremely exciting time for all those involved, and the perfect occasion to shower parents-to-be with gifts and tokens they’ll love and celebrate in style.
