It’s been a challenging year for so many people, but none more so than the nation’s mum. From juggling home schooling, childcare and working from home to keeping the family entertained, mums have gone above and beyond over the last 12 months. With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, March 14th, we looked into the biggest joys and challenges mums have faced during the pandemic.
We can reveal that while 98% of British mums have found the past year challenging, more than half (56%) have appreciated spending more quality time with their children during the enforced restrictions. Going for a walk together (47%), watching a film together (39%) and cooking a meal together (23%) were found to be the top activities’ mums have enjoyed doing most with their little ones. And despite most of the year being lived in lockdown, mums admitted that there were a number of small moments that delivered big on joy. From feeling closer to their children (43%) to watching their children’s personality blossom (38%).
However, the year was not without its challenges for mums. Mums have struggled to find time for themselves (41%), manage their mental health (41%) and home-schooling during lockdown (41%). Looking at how mums have spent their time during lockdown, most of their time was spent working each day following by a home-schooling session with their children – both totalled to 5 and a half hours out of the day, while alone time for the average mum was only 54 minutes a day.
