The Best First Day Of School Scenes From Our Favourite Movies And TV Shows
After weeks of lie-ins, sun-drenched trips abroad, and relaxing staycations, going back to school can be a bit of an adjustment – and the first day is always the hardest.
To get your mind and body in the back-to-school mood, here’s a round-up of our favourite ‘first day of school’ scenes from movies and TV shows:
1. The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter’s first day at the magical Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is very special. After years of being locked up (specifically in the cupboard under the stairs) and bullied by the Dursley’s, the young wizard finds a place he can call home and meets his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
The sorting hat scene shows that when you’ve got great people around you, things are easier to deal with – and seeing Hogwarts Great Hall for the first time is truly wonderful.
2. Introducing Rizzo And The Pink Ladies, Grease
Instead of fearing the first day back, take Rizzo and the Pink Ladies approach and get ready to ‘rule the school’. The ladies arrive at Rydell High School in their signature jackets on the first day of senior year; they’re cool, calm and collected – after all, they’re at the top of the chain now.
This scene is the perfect lesson in the power of confidence; when you’re positive about the back-to-school season, it’s easier to get through the first day.
3. Welcome To The Jungle, Mean Girls
Cady Heron has been home schooled in Africa her whole life, but she arrives to her first day at North Shore High confident and happy, despite not knowing the ‘rules’ of the school. Luckily, she meets Janis and Damian who guide her through the high school’s jungle, teaching her that ‘where you sit in the cafeteria is crucial’.
This scene shows that you don’t need to know absolutely everything on your first day, time and the right people will help you find your way.
4. Super Mom, Gilmore Girls
Lorelai and Rory’s relationship is a special one; they’re best friends, tell each other anything and everything, and have the best mother-daughter traditions so Rory heading off to Yale was always going to be a tough adjustment for the pair. When Rory is struggling with her new living space and roommates, Lorelai comes to the rescue and hosts a super sleepover that soars Rory to the top of the popularity list.
The important lesson? You’re never too old to call mom for help.
